SteelPan Bands Semi-Finals

This is the Semi-Finals of the Small, Medium and Large Conventional SteelPan Bands Competition. Small Bands have a minimum of 25 players to a maximum of 40 players, Medium Bands consist of a minimum of 45 players to a maximum of 90 players and the larger bands consist of a minimum of 90 players with a maximum of 120 players. The event takes place in the Queen’s Park Savannah. Ticket Costs are North Greens –TT$300, Paddock Stands TT$260, Track TT$80.

EX-Tempo
/ Limbo Preliminaries

This is the art of extemporaneously singing on any given topic. It is a difficult art to master and very few singers’ posses the skill to compose verses especially as they only have a few seconds to do this after the topic is presented to them. The competitors duel with each other in and extempo ‘war’. It is a fantastic battle where each competitor tries to out do the other. Many relish these off-the-cuff performances asserting that only the truly skilled can compete in this arena. The Limbo competitions are also very exciting with each group trying to outdo each other. |

The Senior King & Queen Preliminary Competition is a showcase for the ‘Mas Designers’ to show off their skill and artistry. These costumes are portrayed by individuals and are very large and elaborate. Costumes range from about 20 ft wide to about 30 ft tall, and the costumes weight more than 200 lbs. The masqueraders have wheels on the costumes to assist them in carrying it off. Ticket Costs - TT$100.

This event takes place at Normandie Hotel. This is a Trinidadian Soca band that was formed in 2005 by brothers. They are noted for their high energy performances and is one of the most popular and sought after bands in Trinidad, throughout the Caribbean as well as the US and Canada. Chutney Starz!

This event takes place at Normandie Hotel. Chutney music originated in Trinidad, It was sung originally by Indian women and was originally religious in nature. Now however the music has evolved and besides the Indian beats now includes a soca beat. The songs are sung in not only Hindi but also English and are not always religious in nature, in fact some of the songs can be suggestive as well as comical. There are also many male performers now and usually Indian Dancers are included in the performances. This event will include performances by the band Karma and of course the winners of the Chutney Soca Competition. Ticket Costs – Show Only TT$175/ Dinner & Show TT$360.

This is the patois for ‘Old Yard’ and is pure street theater and a treat in terms of seeing true old-time Carnival arts. Viey La Cou was a folk fair that was started up by theater folk as a means of keeping alive some of Carnival’s finest theatrical practices. One can see various characters from folklore and even society portrayed. There are Midnight Robbers, devils, imps, roving minstrels, Pierrot Grenade, Dame Lorraines, Jammettes etc. Ticket costs – Adults –TT$50, Children – TT$20.

Limbo Finals

Limbo is a dance which originated right here in Trinidad (though often mistakenly associated with Hawaii), the dancers move to a Caribbean rhythm and then leans backwards and dance under a horizontal stick that is placed on 2 poles. All the dancers line up and dance one by one under the stick, the stick is lowered again and again until it is just inches above the ground as the dancers ‘limbo’ under it without touching it, until only one dancer who has not touched the stick remains, and they’re declared the winner. |

The Greats

This event takes place at Normandie Hotel. The Greats – Celebrating the Music of ‘The GrandMaster & The Birdie’. Lord Kitchener (1922-2000) was known as the ‘Grandmaster’ of Calypso. His real name was Aldwyn Roberts and he was one of Trinidad’s Legendary Calypsonians. He was a prolific writer and singer and for over half a century he was widely admired for his musicianship, compositions and performance, he won the Road March title 10 times, many of his songs are played by the conventional steelpan bands. The Birdie or The Mighty Sparrow whose real name is Slinger Francisco is the unrivaled Calypso King of the World. He has many famous calypsos and his career spans more than forty years. He has entertained audiences from across the globe. The show on this night will celebrate our Two Greats! There is a choice of attending the Show only or attending Dinner and Show. Ticket Costs – Show Only TT$200/ Dinner & Show TT$385.

| This means ‘day break’ or day open when anything goes. It is the start of Carnival and begins at 4:00am on Carnival Monday. It is a time for the creatures of night – bats, devils, imps etc. Part of the ritual of J’ouvert is that no one avoids being painted. There are some organized bands which have big trucks with music, drinks and security; J’ouvert is most famous for its mud, oil and devil bands. |

PLEASE NOTE: IN ORDER TO TAKE PICTURES AT THE SHOWS YOU MUST PURCHASE AN ACCREDITATION. WITHOUT THIS YOUR CAMERA WILL BE SEIZED BY THE AUTHORITES. ASK US FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO OBTAIN ONE
IN GENERAL:
- Wear light comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes (However if you're attending the Dimanche Gras show, dress for that night should be elegantly casual - meaning don't wear short pants or slippers that night)
- Carry photocopy of ID with you including your Trinidad Address; a phone card; in emergency call us 683-5202 or 757-0139 (take our business card with you also)
- Take lots of sunscreen, a shady hat, sunglasses and drink lots of fluids; Carnival is in the middle of the dry season one can easily become dehydrated.
- Walk with a cushion - seats at can become very uncomfortable / also walk with ear-plugs it can be very loud
- When sampling local cuisine look for food badges on vendors
- If you need assistance ask a uniformed officer
- Don't flash large sums of cash, don't wear expensive jewellery, and DO stay in a group
- Use your instincts, if something doesn't feel right don't do it.
- Before returning to the marinas, check with Jesse before boarding the bus so that we can account for everyone. If you leave earlier tell someone so that we will know where you are.
- There will be DESIGNATED DROP OFF AND PICKUP POINTS as well as DESIGNATED TIMES FOR PICKUP AND RETURN to and from each of the events. |
